CA’ DEI CONTI Il Decimo — Volturnis Red Wine, Veneto IGT

CA’ DEI CONTI Il Decimo — Volturnis Red Wine, Veneto IGT

Il Decimo by Ca’ dei Conti originates in the hills of Tregnago, in the Val d’Illasi, Veneto, Italy, where limestone slopes, stony soils and a longstanding family heritage shape the winegrowing landscape. At approximately 400 metres above sea level, the Rancan family has cultivated its connection to this land for three centuries, finding in Volturnis a contemporary expression of its viticultural identity.

At the heart of this Veneto IGT red wine is Volturnis, a resistant PIWI grape variety, bringing a new dimension to a territory renowned for its traditional Veronese wines. Its cultivation reflects a deliberate balance between agricultural heritage and varietal innovation, exploring new possibilities while preserving a meaningful connection to place.

With yields limited to approximately 1.5 kg of grapes per vine, the family prioritises the quality and concentration of the fruit. Hand-harvested in small crates, the grapes undergo low-temperature maceration, extended fermentation with gentle cap management and subsequent ageing in stainless steel, preserving the purity of the fruit and the distinctive expression of Volturnis.

Il Decimo displays a vivid ruby-red colour, revealing aromas of violet, cherry and blackberry. Intense yet elegant on the palate, it offers a long, pleasant finish. Served at around 12°C. (54°F.), it expresses a fresher character ideal for an aperitif; at 16–18°C. (61–64°F.), it pairs naturally with lighter, more delicate dishes.

For BEYOND*, Il Decimo represents a contemporary interpretation of the Veronese winegrowing landscape, where the individuality of Volturnis meets the limestone hills of Tregnago and the heritage of the Rancan family. An expression of how innovation can enrich a territory's identity without losing its roots.

Il Decimo — A new identity for Veneto, rooted in history and expressed through Volturnis.

Sensory profile

APPEARANCE
Il Decimo displays a vivid, intense ruby-red colour, combining depth with brightness. Its lively appearance reflects the fruit-driven character of Volturnis and a winemaking approach designed to preserve varietal expression without the influence of oak ageing.

NOSE
The aromatic profile opens with distinct notes of violet, cherry and blackberry, forming a combination of floral elegance and ripe fruit. With gentle aeration, the bouquet may reveal further nuances of red berries and subtle spice, while retaining a clear, predominantly fruit-led identity. The absence of oak ageing allows the grape's natural aromatic character to remain at the forefront.

PALATE
Intense yet elegant, the palate develops around clearly defined fruit and a balanced impression of freshness. Cherry and dark berry notes contribute to its aromatic continuity, while the texture offers a sense of softness without excessive weight. Its expression is approachable yet distinctive, favouring harmony over sheer concentration.

BALANCE & STRUCTURE
Il Decimo brings together aromatic intensity, freshness and a measured structure. Acidity supports the fruit's definition, while the tannic component contributes to the wine's overall balance without dominating its character. Ageing in stainless steel preserves a direct interpretation of Volturnis, allowing varietal clarity to take precedence over oak-derived complexity or pronounced extraction.

EVOLUTION IN THE GLASS
With moderate aeration, the initial cherry and blackberry aromas may become more expressive, accompanied by increasingly perceptible floral nuances. Subtle variations in fruit character and texture contribute to a gradual opening in the glass. Extended decanting is not essential to appreciate its principal sensory qualities.

FINISH
The finish is long and pleasantly persistent, carrying echoes of cherry, blackberry and delicate floral notes. A sense of freshness accompanies the closing impression, reinforcing the wine's elegance and continuity rather than relying on power or density.

SENSORY IDENTITY
Il Decimo expresses the individuality of Volturnis grown in the limestone hills of Tregnago, in the Val d’Illasi, Veneto, Italy. Its sensory character centres on vibrant fruit, floral definition and balanced freshness, supported by a restrained structure. It offers a contemporary interpretation of the Veronese winegrowing landscape, distinct from the richer styles associated with traditional grape drying and extended oak maturation.

SERVING TEMPERATURE
12–14°C. (54–57°F.): a cooler serving temperature highlights the wine's fruit vitality, floral expression and refreshing character. This interpretation is particularly suited to an aperitif or occasions where brightness and aromatic immediacy are desired.

16–18°C. (61–64°F.): a slightly warmer temperature allows a fuller appreciation of the wine's texture, structural balance and more developed fruit nuances, making it particularly suitable for pairing with lighter, delicate dishes.

Serving temperature therefore becomes a sensory key rather than a purely technical recommendation, revealing two complementary dimensions of Volturnis.

BEYOND INTERPRETATION*
For BEYOND*, Il Decimo offers an interpretation of Volturnis that does not rely on the concentrated aromatics of grape drying or the complexity imparted by oak. Its individuality lies in the relationship between fruit clarity, freshness and elegant structure, expressed within a precisely identifiable winegrowing landscape.

On the limestone hills of Tregnago, the Rancan family gives a resistant grape variety a distinctive place within its winemaking heritage. The result is a red wine that does not seek to imitate established Veronese styles, but broadens the territory's expressive possibilities through a different relationship between grape variety, origin and vinification.
