BELLAGUARDIA Montecchi Durello — Pas Dosé, Traditional Method
BELLAGUARDIA Montecchi Durello — Pas Dosé, Traditional Method
In Montecchio Maggiore, Veneto, Italy, on the crest of the hill crowned by the historic castles of Romeo and Juliet, Bellaguardia Montecchi Durello Pas Dosé gives expression to one of Italy's most distinctive yet comparatively little-known indigenous grape varieties. At the foothills of the Lessini Mountains, Durella belongs to a deeply rooted winegrowing tradition now gaining renewed recognition through increasingly ambitious sparkling-wine interpretations. Montecchi embodies this evolving identity: not merely an alternative expression of Traditional Method winemaking, but an opportunity to reveal the individuality of a grape and landscape whose remarkable character deserves to be appreciated well beyond their native territory.
Crafted exclusively from 100% Durella, grown in the estate-owned Castelli vineyard at approximately 250 metres above sea level, Montecchi reflects a precisely defined origin and a disciplined winemaking philosophy. The vines, traditionally pergola-trained, grow on loamy clay-limestone soils. Grapes are harvested by hand into crates and cooled in the estate's historic underground caves before gentle pressing and fermentation in stainless steel. Secondary fermentation in bottle is followed by more than 66 months of lees ageing, allowing Durella's naturally vibrant character to develop greater complexity and textural finesse. With no sugar added at disgorgement, the Pas Dosé approach preserves the clarity of its varietal expression and the distinctive tension of its uncompromisingly dry palate.
In the glass, a luminous pale-yellow colour with delicate golden reflections accompanies exceptionally fine yet lively bubbles. The aromatic profile reveals the purity of white blossoms, linden flower and acacia, followed by fresh citrus impressions and the distinctive character of barely ripe quince. Extended lees maturation contributes a more intricate texture, bringing depth and precision to the grape's natural energy while preserving its recognisable freshness and savoury definition. Elegant yet purposeful, Montecchi finds particularly compelling companions in richly flavoured fish dishes, traditional Venetian cured meats — especially sopressa — and delicately matured cheeses.
BEYOND* — An authentic territorial expression of Durella, grown on the castle hill of Montecchio Maggiore and matured for more than sixty-six months on lees. Montecchi reveals how a historic grape variety, still relatively unfamiliar to international audiences, can acquire renewed recognition through precision, character and uncompromising craftsmanship. Not the discovery of a new terroir, but the contemporary revelation of an identity that deserves far greater attention.

Sensory profile
APPEARANCE
A luminous pale straw yellow with delicate golden reflections, potentially more pronounced in mature releases. Fine, persistent bubbles create a composed, lively mousse. Earlier vintages have displayed variations from brilliant pale yellow to deeper golden hues, reflecting differences in bottle development and disgorgement. An elegant visual expression balancing freshness with the subtle maturity acquired through extended lees ageing.
NOSE
A distinctive floral signature centred on linden blossom, acacia and white flowers, complemented by daisy and hawthorn impressions documented in professional tastings of the 2018 vintage. Golden apple, slightly underripe quince and fresh citrus provide aromatic clarity, while earlier releases have revealed nuances of stone fruit, chamomile and calendula. Prolonged lees maturation may introduce subtle bread and yeast-derived notes. Specialist reviews have also described iodine-like, maritime and faintly sulphurous impressions, adding intriguing layers of complexity without obscuring Durella's characteristic freshness.
PALATE
A vibrant, sharply defined entry driven by Durella's naturally high acidity, fine effervescence and the uncompromising dryness of Pas Dosé. Citrus, crisp apple and quince unfold across a dynamic palate, accompanied by a pronounced savoury dimension. Professional tastings of the 2018 vintage emphasise incisive freshness and maritime character, whereas the 2012 release displayed greater roundness alongside remarkable vitality. Extended lees ageing provides textural depth and continuity, allowing intensity and precision to coexist without relying on added sweetness.
BALANCE & STRUCTURE
The wine's balance emerges from the interaction between firm acidity, sustained freshness and the textural complexity developed through prolonged bottle maturation. Fine bubbles reinforce its structure, while the absence of dosage exposes the relationship between acidity, texture and persistence with particular clarity. Earlier vintages demonstrate expressions ranging from taut and linear to more rounded and expansive. The result is a structured Traditional Method sparkling wine whose elegance derives from tension and proportion rather than concentration or overt richness.
EVOLUTION IN THE GLASS
With gentle aeration and a gradual rise in temperature, fresh floral and citrus aromas may evolve towards chamomile, stone fruit, citrus peel and restrained bread-like nuances. The candied citrus, iodine-like and sulphurous impressions reported in particular earlier vintages suggest further possible dimensions, dependent on vintage, disgorgement and bottle evolution. As the initial effervescence softens, the wine's underlying acidity, texture and savoury character may become more apparent, rewarding attentive tasting.
FINISH
Persistent, precise and sustained by energetic freshness. Citrus zest, quince and delicate floral impressions lead towards a distinctly savoury conclusion, with maritime nuances particularly evident in professional assessments of the 2018 vintage. More mature releases may reveal additional breadth through subtle ripe-fruit and lees-derived notes. The finish remains clean and focused, favouring aromatic continuity and structural tension over residual sweetness or excessive richness.
SENSORY IDENTITY
Montecchi offers a compelling interpretation of 100% indigenous Durella, combining expressive floral aromatics, vibrant natural acidity, uncompromising Pas Dosé precision and extended lees maturation. Linden blossom, acacia, citrus and underripe quince form its documented aromatic core, enriched in earlier professional tastings by hawthorn, Golden apple, maritime impressions and delicate autolytic complexity. Rather than reproducing the familiar profile of international sparkling-wine varieties, Montecchi preserves Durella's distinctive character while allowing prolonged maturation to develop greater texture and depth.
SERVING TEMPERATURE
8–10°C. (46–50°F.), allowing the wine to approach 10–12°C. (50–54°F.) gradually in the glass when exploring the complexity of more mature bottles. A generously shaped tulip glass or refined white-wine glass is preferable to a narrow flute, providing sufficient room for aromatic development while retaining the perception of fine bubbles. Avoid excessively cold service, which can accentuate acidity while suppressing delicate floral notes and lees-derived texture.
BEYOND* INTERPRETATION
Montecchi reveals the remarkable potential of Durella, a historic grape variety from the Lessini foothills whose distinctive character remains relatively unfamiliar to international audiences. Originating from Bellaguardia's Castelli vineyard above Montecchio Maggiore, it combines the grape's natural vitality with the discipline of Traditional Method winemaking and the precision of Pas Dosé. Its extended lees maturation is not simply an expression of time, but a means of transforming incisive freshness into structural depth without compromising varietal identity. For BEYOND*, Montecchi represents the contemporary rediscovery of an established yet underappreciated terroir: a wine defined not by imitation or excess, but by authenticity, tension and a singular sense of origin.
